Hold your breath! A typical cow produces 120 pounds of waste each day. Not very pleasant to smell, but even worse for the environment. Manure produces methane, which is a powerful greenhouse gas. Methane emitted from cow waste into the atmosphere is 23 times more potent than CO2. The good news is that gasses emitted from cow waste can be captured and used as a renewable energy source.
“NW Natural Gas has partnered with The Climate Trust to offer a voluntary program that supports projects designed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, like biogas from cow manure. For as little as $6 a month, you can support innovative environmental projects here in the Western United States. We’ll invest your Smart Energy dollars in projects that prevent the release of greenhouse gases.
NW Natural is offsetting the carbon dioxide emissions from the natural gas used to heat our facilities, resulting in the removal of more than 6,160 tons of CO2 over the next five years. With additional contributions from customers like you, together we can offset thousands of tons of carbon dioxide.” From NWNatural.com
